The Rt Revd Paul Butler, Bishop of Durham will conduct the cutting of the sod ceremony at Wynyard Church of England Primary School on Wednesday 21st Feb 2018. The Bishop will be accompanied by 6 children from the school’s council and will conduct a short ceremony to mark the breaking of ground of the school’s new building.
The ceremony marks the point where work on building a permanent structure commences.
Director of Education for the Dioceses of Durham and Newcastle, Paul Rickeard said: “I am excited that we are breaking ground on a permanent site for the incredibly successful Wynyard Church of England Primary School. We opened the school in 2015 with 12 children operating from a set of portacabins, we now have grown to over 160 children and are on target to reach capacity soon.”
This is an important milestone in the journey of the school which has more than 70% of its pupils coming from the neighbouring Wynyard estate.
Bishop Paul said: “I am delighted to have been asked to be part of the school’s journey. This is a real success story, it demonstrates how the Church of England is able to be an important part of the lives of the community. Across this Diocese, we educate nearly 16,000 children each day and I am thrilled to be part of that as a new chapter is begun.”
