Careful recruitment can make all the difference to the success of a Deanery Synod. Otherwise, the positions for synod lay representations can end up being the last to be filled, by the least willing candidates. It can be a big help to provide parishes with some information to share with potential candidates, preferably with a personal invitation to consider standing.
The Standing Committee of the House of Laity of General Synod produced a very helpful generic recruitment booklet in 2014, which is likely to be updated for the elections in 2017. You might prefer to create something localised, which could even include a forecast of the kinds of issues that will come up during the triennium. If so, there are examples below of what one deanery has used successfully. (All links will be updated with 2017 versions as they become available.
