Dementia-friendly nativity ‘A Midwife Crisis’ an amazing success!Â
A community came together to perform a nativity with a difference this week with children from West Rainton Primary School and residents from Springfield Lodge Care Home amazing an audience of nearly 160 people as they performed ‘A Midwife Crisis’. Â
Hosted by St Mary’s Church, which created a beautiful backdrop, the cast of 30 young children, eight older adults and three care workers came together to perform the uplifting, funny and energetic nativity.
The West Rainton and Leamside group were recently named Dementia Friendly Community of the Year at Alzheimer’s Society’s annual Dementia Friendly Awards ceremony in London.
The dementia-friendly nativity play was the latest of many actions aimed at making the community more inclusive for people living with the condition.
Explaining the nativity, Headteacher Alison Mcdonough said: “Being dementia friendly meant making small considerations and adaptions.
“The nativity had an older theme, the costumes and hairstyles brought back memories and the church made changes to provide accessible seating, improved signage, large print handouts and sound for the audience members.
“The young people loved working with the older adults and it brought a smile to so many faces across our communityâ€Â Â
As part of the initiative, there are now 135 new Dementia Friends who also played a part in the success of the afternoon. Â
Emily Burns, a Dementia Steering Group volunteer, explained: “Becoming a Dementia Friend is easy.
“The information sessions are great and anyone can attend to gain a greater insight into how dementia affects people.
“It helps us to be that little bit more patient and compassionate towards those that need it.
“Today’s nativity was supported by volunteers from St Mary’s Church, Dementia Steering Group, the School and Springfield Lodge who have all become Dementia Friends. Having this knowledge allows everyone to carry out small dementia actions that can make a huge differenceâ€Â
After this year’s success, the community plans to continue to run local activity sessions, a memory café and host a community domino tournament in 2020. Â
