The Revd Susie Thorp has been appointed as Chaplain to St Johnâ€™s College Durham (which incorporates the Anglican theological college Cranmer Hall) and will also be priest in charge of St Wilfridâ€™s Church in Doxford, Sunderland.
Susie, grew up in Sunderland, and will be licensed as priest in Charge of Â St Wilfredâ€™s on November 10, the day before her 30th birthday. Â Her new role will be split between parish life in Doxford and in supporting staff and Durham University students as Chaplain at St Johnâ€™s college.
She said: â€œThere are exciting opportunities in linking a parish in Sunderland with the university and I am looking forward to growing partnerships between the parish and the college “. â€œHaving grown up in a vicarage, there was a deep sense within me from quite a young age that this is what God wanted me to do. â€œI am passionate about building communities and providingÂ opportunitiesÂ for people to explore the Christian faith, in a world that is often at odds with the teachings of Jesus.â€ Rev Mark Tanner, a Vice Principal of St Johnâ€™s college and Warden of Cranmer Hall, said: â€œItâ€™s fantastic to have a new chaplain and we are very much looking forward to her joining us. Her role is to be available to students and staff.â€
The Venerable Stuart Bain, Archdeacon of Sunderland said: â€œWe are excited to link a Sunderland parish with St John’s College. It is excellent to work in partnership in this way and we believe there will be great spin offs for the parish and college, as time goes on we hope to give students from Durham an experience of life in Sunderland.â€
Susie, the daughter of clergy parents in Durham Diocese, will be part of a team of chaplains working at the university.
