We are looking to recruit a Property Manager who will:
- manage the maintenance and repair of our 210 diocesan houses
- provide excellent customer service
- plan and manage a substantial budget, 2019 £1.1 million per annum
- develop our asset management systems
- work with agents to maximise the return from our commercial land and property portfolio.
The Diocese of Durham is one of 42 Dioceses within the Church of England and covers an area of 987 square miles bounded by the River Tyne in the North and the River Tees in the South. It includes the cities of Durham and Sunderland, the metropolitan boroughs of Gateshead and South Tyneside (including Jarrow and South Shields) and Hartlepool, Darlington and Stockton on Tees. Away from the more urban east side the Diocese also encompasses in the West the rural beauty of Weardale and Teesdale, which reach into the North Pennines.
The Diocese consists of 270 churches across 214 parishes.
Our Property team provides a key supporting role in the mission and ministry of the Diocese.
Reporting to the Diocesan Secretary, the Property Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of our operational properties. This includes:
- Planned and reactive maintenance
- Condition surveying
- Specification of works
- Contract management
You will bring insight and know-how relating to domestic property management, based on a proven track record as a surveyor. Holding Chartered membership of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors or Chartered Institute of Builders, you will combine knowledge of legislation and regulations with an appropriate safety qualification and strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

Salary: Starting salary £41,586
Holiday: 25 days (rising to 28 days after 3 years in post), plus statutory holidays and other customary holidays (including the Tuesday in Easter week and three days between Christmas and New Year).
Pension: 10% employers’ contribution, plus up to a further 5% if matched by the employee.

Reporting to the Diocesan Secretary, the Diocesan Property Manager fulfils the duties of a Diocesan Surveyor, being responsible for the day to day management of the portfolio of operational property, and for the delivery of projects within that portfolio.
The work includes the preparation of quinquennial inspection reports for each property, the creation and ongoing management of the planned maintenance programme, the specification and management of projects, and liaison with local stakeholders as required. The post-holder oversees the work of the Property Administration Team.
The context for the work is a move towards a strategic approach to property management, featuring a greater emphasis on a planned maintenance programme. The post-holder will bring insight and know-how relating to domestic property management, surveying, contract and project management, and construction procurement to the team.
The post includes a requirement to travel to meetings throughout, and sometimes beyond, the Diocese when required, and to work flexibly outside office hours as the needs of the post dictate.
